My brother and I went on an antique shopping trip to Dewey, Oklahoma to see what kind of mid-century modern goodies we could find. Dewey is a small town just north of Bartlesville, which is about 50 miles north of Tulsa.

Most of the antique stores in Dewey are located on a street downtown called Don Tyler.

Roy Rogers and Hoppalong Cassidy lunch boxes are mid-century, but not exactly modern. They’re just too cool to go unmentioned.

One shop has a curio case full of mid-century modern dinnerware in various patterns in shades of aqua. They have pieces of Canonsburg’s “Temporama,” “Blue Heaven” by Royal China, “Navajo” by Metlox, and several Franciscan patterns, including “Autumn,” “Starburst,” “Oasis” and “Swing Time.” It’s a good opportunity for someone to fill holes in their collections.

The same shop has a display of pink 1950s kitchen items and knick-knacks, including Russel Wright dinnerware.

These are two modern buildings in downtown Dewey.

Campbell’s Antiques is loaded with vintage lighting.

They also have a several cabinets that are chock-full of vintage salt and pepper shakers.

We found this wonderful book of mid-century modern house plans from the 1950s called “What A Home Should Be.”

Linger Longer Antiques is the largest antique shop in Dewey.

They have an old-fashioned soda shop that serves up tasty treats for tired shoppers.

This may be the coolest t.v. lamp I’ve ever seen. Just imagine how spooky those glowing eyes must look when the light is turned on.

This booth has lots of kitchen collectibles from the depression era through the 1950s.

Here’s a vintage post card book from Canon City, Colorado.

She’s not for sale.

This booth is filled with nothing but mid-century modern furniture and accessories.

Some other attractions in Dewey include the Dewey Hotel Museum. The museum is furnished in period antiques, many of which belonged to the original owner, Jacob Bartles.

The Tom Mix Museum celebrates the life of the western movie star and 101 Ranch cowboy with displays of his western clothing, saddles, and personal belongings.

As we started our trip back home, we stopped in Bartlesville to take a few photos.

Price Tower

Comanche Center

Travelers Motel

My husband surprised me with custom double-tiered shades from Moon Shine Lamp and Shade. I couldn’t have been more impressed, both with him and Moon Shine. They make the shades to your specifications. You pick the shape, color, and design.

They even make replacement shades for Majestic Z lamps, which is something I’ll keep in mind if I find a good deal on a Z lamp with missing or damaged shades.

The tripod base has a built-in planter, which I don’t use because a plant just seems to get in the way and clutter the clean look of the lamp. The original shade is turquoise with gold and white brushstrokes.

It’s the lamp that started my mid-century modern lamp collection and it’s my favorite. I bought it about 15 years ago at a flea market. It’s my favorite lamp and it only cost $20.

We picked up this lamp on an antique shopping excursion in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

T.V. lamps were designed to prevent damage to the eyes that was thought to be caused by the bright light of the television set. Placing a lamp on top of the set was believed to prevent this vision damage. This was later disproven and it may have been just another marketing ploy from the beginning.

T.V. lamps are so appealing because they come in so many over-the-top 1950s kitsch designs.

These '50s pink boudoir lamps are another Ebay find. They arrived with a label attached that said they belonged to the seller's grandparents. I always think of them as Grandma and Grandpa's lamps.

We use these lamps in the master bedroom of our mid-century modern ranch house. That atomic starburst shape appears once again in this pair of lamps, which have double-tiered shades with a splatter design. The vintage shades are not original to these particular lamps, but are another Ebay purchase.

This mid-century modern desk lamp looks like it could appear on Mad Men. It’s brass with teak wood at the base of the arms. The fiberglass rattan shades on this lamp are a perfect match for one of the vintage wall sconces in our office.

The small size of the room makes it difficult to get photos from very many angles, so I’ve taken close-up photos to give a better idea of how the room looks.

With its brass sputnik rays shooting out from the top, it looks like it's ready to go into orbit. I'm just noticing how many of our vintage lamps have this atomic design.

This lamp is aqua with small white diamond shapes that appear to be circling the lamp. It still has the original 1950s fiberglass two-tiered shade.
